King's KNS-81 is a sophisticated Integrated Navigation System. It combines, in one chassis, a 200 channel VOR/LOC NAV receiver, a digital RNAV computer, and a 40 channel Glideslope Receiver.
The KNS-81 must be interfaced with a KN-63/KDM-706/KDM-706A DME Receiver/Transmitter and a KDI-572/KDI-573/KDI-574/KPI-553A DME indicator. (If you don't have this DME equipment installed, the KNS-80 is far more economical. The KNS-80 is a better choice for a new installation, provided you can fit its 3-inch height in your radio stack.)
The RNAV computer allows the pilot to electronically "move" a VOR, allowing more direct flight. The computer also helps with flight planning by providing the preselection and storage of 9 frequencies and/or RNAV waypoints.
The bright Silver Crown gas-discharge display presents this information clearly. The display shows the frequency, radial, and distance for the current waypoint simultaneously.
The only drawback to the KNS-81 is that it is slightly taller than the usual flat-pack radios. This unit is about 2 inches tall. If you have the space in your radio stack, you can add a lot of capability with a KNS-81.
The KNS-81 features:
Internal VOR/LOC Converter
Self-dimming display
TSO'd
Since the King KNS-81 contains an internal VOR/LOC Converter, it is designed to be used with indicators that do not include this converter, such as:
King KI-202 GPS/VOR/LOC
King KI-206 GPS/VOR/LOC/Glideslope
King KNI-520 GPS/VOR/LOC/Glideslope
King KI-525/525A HSI (part of a KCS-55/55A system)
